Americans travelling abroad should safeguards passports as they would any other valuable. To issue an American passport, the proof of identity and citizenship is required. Otherwise, to prove your identity, you need to provide two forms of photo ID, such as a drivers license. To prove citizenship, you need to provide an original or a certified copy of your US birth certificate, certificate of naturalization or Consular report of Birth Abroad.
Effective April 2002, US passports must be issued in photo-digitalized format. This requires sending the application to the US by express mail, with return by express mail within approximately two weeks. All passport applicants must provide two identical 2" by 2" photos in either color or black and white. The fee to renew an adult or minor passport applies.
